Talk by Tan Sri Hanafiah
The Malaysian Chapter of ICAEW hosted their inaugural evening talk by Tan Sri Dato’ Hanafiah Bin Hussain on 13 December 2007 at Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This dynamic series of evening talks represents an opportunity for students as well as guests to hear from distinguished ICAEW members within Malaysia. It also provides an invaluable platform for exchange of ideas and experiences.
Tan Sri Hanafiah was the first Bumiputera to receive the ICAEW professional qualification. During his illustrious career spanning over more than four decades, he contributed enormously to the country via his participation in the corporate world as well as the political scene.
Students and guests were given a personal glimpse into Tan Sri Hanafiah’s experiences as a student in the UK. In addition, Tan Sri Hanafiah also shared with participants on how his training as a chartered accountant has helped shape his career, which included a stint as a special envoy with the rank of ambassador to Taiwan as well as Chairman of Bank Bumiputra Malaysia Bhd, among others.
The talk, interlaced with witty anecdotes, highlighted an important message. The training structure as well as the accountancy profession may have evolved over the years. However, what has been and always should be the cornerstone of accounting remains unchanged – ethics. |

CPD - you
need to know
The New Continuing Professional Development (CPD) applies to
all members, irrespective of their area of work. The learning
and development you undertake should be relevant to your current
role and we do not expect you to be up to date with changes
in the accountancy profession, if they are not relevant to
what you do now.
It is up to you to determine what you need to do to keep
up to date with you role and what activities to undertake.
The training that you undertake to ensure you are up to
date with regards to your business would cover your CPD requirements
as well, and this should therefore mean you will need to
complete no extra training to comply with the CPD requirements. |

Malaysian Ministry of Finance Officially Launches ACA Tuition Programme
On Tuesday 17 August, the ICAEW launched a new partnership with Sunway College, Malaysia's most prestigious private college. The college will provide ACA tuition from October 2004 and the first intake already numbers 23 students, which is encouraging and bodes well for the future.
The launch was an auspicious occasion, officiated by representatives from the Ministry of Finance. Despite a crowded market for accountancy qualifications in Malaysia, there is recognition that the ACA represents the highest quality and prestige.
ICAEW President Paul Druckman addressed more than 100 Members, media, and guests from business and industry who attended the launch. He commented that this partnership would contribute to Malaysia's aspiration to be a regional centre for educational excellence and it is one that would build value and underpin the strength and diversity of the local, as well as global accounting community.
The ICAEW Malaysia Committee has been instrumental in promoting the ICAEW brand and ACA training. Through their tireless efforts, the number of organisations interested in training ACAs has grown, and with it the diversity of work experience available for local students. Four new training organisations have recently been authorised to train ACAs and were awarded their Certificates of Authorisation at the launch. Three of these are from business; Sunway Group, Genting Resorts World Berhad and ECM Libra Berhad, with Chartered Accountancy firm, Peter Chong and Co completing the four. |

Independent Directors' Register
In 2003, ICAEW launched the ICAEW Independent Directors Register in the UK, which is an online database of Chartered Accountants. The register provides an invaluable resource to companies and organizations who are looking for persons who are keen to take on the position of an independent director.
The Register is available to companies in the UK as well as other parts of the world. Members are encouraged to register if they wish to take on a corporate governance role. (www.icaew.co.uk/idregister).
On similar lines, ICAEW Malaysia has taken the initiative to do the same here in Malaysia where members of ICAEW can register themselves on a Malaysian register if they wish to offer themselves as independent directors for Malaysian public listed companies. This is seen as a positive move as it will raise the standards of corporate governance in Malaysia as well as move towards having truly independent directors which will in turn boost investor confidence.
Members who would like to register should click on www.icaew.com.my/idregister or
.
